AN ASSESSMENT AND BASIC CULTURAL HERITAGE MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES FOR THE MONATE GAME LODGE, CLOSE TO MODIMOLLE, LIMPOPO PROVINCE

Summary

Texture Environmental Consultants requested Archaetnos CC, on behalf of Monate Game Lodge, to assess cultural heritage sites and the reserve and to provide basic management guidelines in this regard. This is to be included in the overall management plan for the site, which is proposed to be declared a nature reserve.

A list of known heritage sites on the property were provided of which some were visited whereas a few new sites were also documented.

The following sites were identified/assessed:

Site 1 – White Kudu shelter – The site is extremely important and thus needs to be preserved

Site 2 – Cooking shelter – The site is important since it is associated with the White Kudu shelter and thus needs to be preserved

Site 3 – Carnivore shelter – The site is of medium significance, but since it likely also is associated with the White Kudu shelter it may be of higher importance. It thus needs to be preserved.

Site 4 – Geological features – The site is of medium heritage significance and needs to be preserved

Site 5 – Giraffe shelter – The site is extremely important and thus needs to be preserved

Site 6 – Hilltop site – The site is extremely important and thus needs to be preserved

Site 7 – Khoe shelter – The site is extremely important and thus needs to be preserved

Site 8 – Marabaraba game board – The site is of medium-high cultural significance and thus needs to be preserved

Site 9 – Baloyi grave – The site is of high cultural significance and thus needs to be preserved

Site 10 – Makhubela grave – The site is of high cultural significance and thus needs to be preserved

Recommendations:

  1. This document serves as basic management guidelines to be implemented. However it is necessary that a CMP be drawn up and implemented to ensure the sustainable preservation of these sites.
  1. The possible unearthing of archaeological and historical features always is a distinct possibility. Should such be identified, an archaeologist should immediately be contacted to assess the find and give guidance for the handling thereof.
  1. The staff responsible for the management of the reserve as well as all other employees should be educated with regards to all aspects mentioned in this management document.
