A RE-ASSESSMENT OF A HISTORICAL SITE AT THE KLIPRIVIERSBERG NATURE RESERVE, CITY OF JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG PROVINCE

In 2018 Archaetnos was appointed by the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association (KNRA) to assess a historical farm yard inside of the reserve. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is the management authority of the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve and the KNRA is a 35-year-old organisation, registered NGO and PBO, with the sole mandate of looking after the conservation/heritage interest of the KNR. The reserve is located in the City of Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province (Figure 1-2). In 2020 some new information became available and thus the report was adapted to include this. The result of this is the re-assessment report.

The original information in the 2018 report is repeated here and the new information added. Thus, this report is a complete one and it is unnecessary to also make use of the 2018 report.

The site assessed is a historical farm yard consisting of the remains of various buildings. The farm yard is situated on the farm Rietvlei 101 IR. Of specific concern was changes made to one of the buildings (the stable[1]), by Mr. B Ngobeli in April 2018, with the intention of using it as a holding pen for the introduction of additional game (Personal communication: LM West), which may influence the cultural integrity thereof.

It needs to be mentioned that the farm is also being claimed under a land claim. Although this report has no reference to the land claim, the information it contains may assist in this regard.

[1] This actually is a milk stable.
