A report on a cultural heritage impact assessment for the proposed Driefontein mining development on the farms Suurwater 366 JS and Leeuwpoort 283 JS, close to Witbank, Mpumalanga Province

Summary

Archaetnos cc was requested by Geovicon to conduct a cultural heritage impact assessment (HIA) for the proposed Driefontein mining development on the farms Suurwater 366 JS and Leeuwpoort 283 JS. This is close to Witbank in the Mpumalanga Province.

The client indicated the areas where the proposed development is to take place and the survey was confined to this area. It consists of two separate areas close to each other. A survey of the available literature was also undertaken in order to obtain background information regarding the area.

The area where the development is planned is almost totally disturbed by past mining activities. However one sites of cultural heritage significance was located. The site is of a low significance and therefore this report is seen as ample mitigation in this regard.

The proposed development may thus continue. It should be noted that the subterranean presence of archaeological and/or historical sites, features or artifacts is always a distinct possibility. Care should therefore be taken when work on site commences that if any of these are discovered, a qualified archaeologist be called in to investigate.
