A final report regarding research on the Bakoni Ba Marangrang and other competing land claims, Thaba Chweu Local Municipality, Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga Province
Summary
Archaetnos cc was appointed by the Office of the State Attorney in Pretoria, on behalf of the Regional Land Claim Commission for the Mpumalanga Province, to conduct a thorough investigative research process related to land claims in the Badfontein Valley, located in the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (Lydenburg area) of the Mpumalanga Province. Various competing claims, including the so-called BaKoni Ba Marangrang Community, Mnisi family and other individual claims has been lodged on various farms in the area. All relevant records pertaining to these claims as well as the history and archaeology of the area had to be scrutinized, while in loco inspections of sites indicated by the claimants as evidence of their residence in, us of and link to the claimed properties also had to be undertaken.
A first report (AE 1152) contained the results of a summary of information contained in the Land Claims files and a Research Report by Gijima Distribution Solutions in 2010. The second report (AE 1182) contains information obtained from documents presented to Archaetnos cc by the Badfontein Landowners Association (BLOA), based on research they commissioned from other experts. It consists of Archival, Historical, Ethnographical, Archaeological and Deeds Office information.
This third and final report contains the results of the in loco site inspections carried out in conjunction with the claimants, land owner representatives, the claimants’ legal counsel and members of the RLCC during August 2011. A summary and interpretation of all information obtained during the various phases is also included in this document.
