A 2nd heritage impact assessment (HIA) report for the proposed new regional
landfill site on the farm Weltevreden 227 IR, near Delmas, Mpumalanga

Summary

Archaetnos cc was requested by BKS Environmental Consultants to conduct a Heritage Impact Assessment on various portions of the farm Weltevreden 227 IR, near Delmas in Mpumalanga. A new Landfill site (the Witbank-Ogies Regional) is being proposed.

During a previous survey for the same landfill development (on other portions of the same farm), a known grave site in the area of proposed development was assessed and recorded. A section of the area is currently used as a quarry for and a brick making factory while portions are under agriculture. Beside the graves, the remains of the farm laborer settlement associated with the graves and the early farming history of the area were also identified and recorded during 2010.

During the 2011 assessment a number of other sites of some significance were identified, including another graveyard that might be impacted upon by the proposed development. The report gives a discussion of these sites and also gives an indication of the methodology followed. It also indicates how to deal with any cultural heritage (archaeological & historical) sites, features and material that may be unearthed during future development activities.

The sites are of medium to high significance. Mitigation measures to minimize the impact of the development on these sites are put forward at the end of this report. Once these have been implemented, from a Heritage point of view, the development can continue. This will include the recommendations made in the 2010 report (AE1036 June 2010).
