A report on a Phase 1 heritage impact assessment (HIA) for a proposed pipeline and two dams to be constructed at Kleinkopje Colliery close to Emalahleni, Northwest Province

Summary

Archaetnos cc was appointed by WSP Environment & Energy to conduct a heritage impact assessment relating to certain proposed developments at the Kleinkopje Colliery, close to eMalahleni in the Mpumalanga Province. The proposed developments entail the construction of a pipeline and two dams.

The fieldwork undertaken revealed no sites of cultural heritage significance. The area is largely disturbed by past human activities such as agriculture and mining.

The proposed development may therefore continue and this report is seen as ample mitigation in this regard. The developer however needs to take note that archaeological and historical objects may be unearthed during construction activities. In such a case an archaeologist should immediately be called in to investigate.
