A report on the documentation of graves to be impacted on by the proposed lanseria commercial crossing development on portions of Bultfontein 533 JQ, Nooitgedacht 534 JQ and Nietgedacht 535 JQ, near Lanseria Gauteng

Summary

Archaetnos cc was requested in 2011 by the Cavaleros Construction Co (Pty) Ltd to conduct a Heritage Impact Assessment for the proposed Proposed Lanseria Commercial development, situated on various portions of Bultfontein 533 JQ, Nooitgedacht 534 JQ and Nietgedacht 535 JQ, in Gauteng. A large-scale warehousing and other industrial development are being planned.

During the HIA a number of informal cemeteries, containing around 66 graves in total were identified. These sites will be impacted on by the development and will have to be relocated. The social consultation process has been started and the consent of descendants for the relocation of the graves has also been obtained in principle for a number of these. During January the graves were visited with a spokesperson for the Mahlangu family (whose graves are contained in one of the graveyards), as well as members of some of the other graves in the area in order to identify some of the graves (names of deceased/dates of death, etc).

This document is a report on this visit and will provide information on the individual graves on each site, as well as give an indication of the way forward in terms of the final and successful exhumation and relocation of these graves.
