A report on a heritage impact assessment for the divertion of a 400kv Eskom powerline from the Shanduka Coal Mine to adjacent farms near Middelburg in the Mpumalanga Province

Summary

Archaetnos cc was appointed by Cabanga Concepts to conduct a cultural heritage study for the proposed diversion of a 400kV power line from the Shanduka Colliery to adjacent farms. This is located close to Middelburg in the Mpumalanga Province.

The fieldwork undertaken revealed four two of cultural heritage significance. The first is a grave yard close to the start of the proposed line and the second a railway bridge close to option A.

The grave site is far enough from the line to not be impacted on directly. It should just be steered clear from. The bridge may be over spanned and care should be taken that it is not damaged in the process. Note should also be taken that all archaeological and historical sites may not have been identified. It also is possible that subterranean archaeological sites may be found later on. On identification of these it needs to dealt with by an archaeologist.
