A report on a heritage impact assessment (HIA) for the proposed Southern Anthracite Mine, close to Komatipoort, Mpumalanga Province
Summary
Archaetnos cc was appointed by Prime Resources to conduct a heritage impact assessment for the proposed Southern Anthracite Mine. This is close to Komatipoort in the Mpumalanga Province.
The fieldwork undertaken revealed sixteen sites of cultural heritage significance. This includes fourteen grave sites and two Iron Age sites. Some of these sites lie just outside of the area to be affected by the proposed development, but since it is very close thereto it needs to be discussed. Mitigation measures for these as well as for the sites within the proposed mining area are discussed in the report. Once the mitigation has been implemented, the development may continue.
The developer however needs to take note that all archaeological and historical sites may not have been identified due to different environmental factors. It also is possible that subterranean archaeological sites may be found later on. Should such sites be identified, it needs to be dealt with by an archaeologist.
