Report on a desktop study with regards to the cultural heritage relating to the proposed building of a dam wall in the Buffalo River on the farm Tigerkloof 399 HS, Kwazulu-Natal Province

Summary

Archaetnos cc was appointed by EON Consulting to do a desktop study regarding the cultural heritage on the farm Tigerkloof 399 HS. This is for the proposed building of a dam wall in the Buffalo River on the farm. The farm is situated close to the town of Utrecht in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. This report gives a broad overview of the heritage of the wider geographical area.

Sources that were used include a variety of archival documents, literature sources, databases and unpublished reports. Very little is known about the heritage of the area since not much research was yet done here.

However the environment is very suitable for the settlement and utilization thereof by people. It therefore it is very likely that heritage sites or objects linked to these people may be found here.

White farmers also moved into the area since the 1850’s. Buildings and graves associated with these people therefore may also be located in the study area.

However, it is unlikely that such occurrences will be found at the specific site where the dam wall will be built. This is due to the slope thereof and it being inside of the river.
