A report on a supplementary heritage impact assessment for the proposed new bulk water and sewer pipeline from Cosmo City to Lanseria, Gauteng ProvinceSummary
During February 2014, Archaetnos cc was appointed by MGTD Environmental to conduct a Heritage Impact Assessment for the proposed new bulk water and sewer pipeline between Cosmo City and Lanseria. This is located in the Gauteng Province. Due to changes made in the original pipeline routes, an supplementary Heritage Impact Assessment was requested in January 2015. This report deals with the findings of both surveys.
During the first survey, no sites of heritage importance were noted. On the second occasion, the fieldwork undertaken revealed one site of cultural heritage significance. It is a grave yard and it therefore is proposed that the water pipeline be moved to the west in order not to affect the graves. The proposed development may continue, but with a buffer of 50 m from the grave yard.
It should however be noted that the subterranean presence of archaeological and/or historical sites, features or artifacts is always a distinct possibility. Care should therefore be taken when the development commences that if any of these are discovered, a qualified archaeologist be called in to investigate.
