A report on a heritage impact assessment for the proposed Bapsfontein Filling Station, Gauteng ProvinceSummary

Archaetnos cc was appointed by Landscape Dynamics to conduct a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) for the proposed Bapsfontein Filling Station. This is at Bapsfontein in the Gauteng Province.

The project entails the construction of a filling station and associated infrastructure on Portion 24 of the Farm Bronkhorstfontein 20 at the north-western corner of the R25 (Bapsfontein/ Bronkhorstpruit Road) and the R50 (Delmas Road) intersection. It is proposed to establish a facility for the storage of approximately 80 000 liter fuel.

The fieldwork undertaken revealed no sites of cultural heritage significance. The entire area has been subjected to agriculture in the recent past. And therefore is completely disturbed. The proposed development may therefore continue.

It should be noted that due to the nature of the subterranean presence of archaeological and/or historical sites, features or artifacts, the possibility to find these during the course of construction work are always real. Care should therefore be taken, when development work commences, that if any of these are accidentally discovered, a qualified archaeologist be called in to investigate.
