A report on a walk-down archaeological heritage impact assessment for the proposed Eskom Hendrina-Zamokhule Project, Mpumalanga ProvinceSummary

Archaetnos cc was appointed by Texture Environmental Consultants to conduct a walk-down cultural heritage impact assessment for the proposed ESKOM Hendrina-Zamokhule Project. The line will run between the Hendrina Power Station close to Pullens Hope to the Zamokhule Substation at the town of Hendrina. It therefore runs from the town in a north-western direction. Hendrina is in the Mpumalanga Province.
Different options for the route were studies earlier and the route currently studied is the final one decided on. The fieldwork undertaken revealed no sites of cultural heritage significance. The main reason for this is that the final option was deliberately chosen to exclude heritage features identified by earlier studies. Certain section of the route however also shows signs of disturbance which would have resulted in heritage features not being present. It is therefore concluded that the project may continue.
It should be noted however that the subterranean presence of archaeological and/or historical sites, features or artifacts is always a distinct possibility. Care should therefore be taken when the development commences that if any of these are discovered, a qualified archaeologist be called in to investigate and that the report be amended if necessary.
It is also important to take cognizance that it is the client’s responsibility to do the submission of this report via the SAHRIS System on the SAHRA website. No work on site may commence before receiving the necessary comments from SAHRA.
