A report on a heritage assessment relating to an addendum to the proposed Eskom Buffelspruit-Khanyazwe Project, Malelane, Mpumalanga ProvinceSummary
Archaetnos cc was appointed by Ecosolve to do an amendment to the basic assessment report for the proposed ESKOM power lines close to Malelane, between Buffelspruit and Khanyazwe. It refers to two deviations to the originally approved route which had to be assessed for cultural historical and archaeological features. The changes were necessary since the original approved route encroached on areas unacceptable to the farmers.
This is situated to the east of Malelane, in the Mpumalanga Province. Since it is a deviation, only one option for these was surveyed.
The fieldwork undertaken revealed no sites of cultural heritage significance. The area is largely disturbed by past human activities such as different agricultural fields and existing ESKOM lines.
From a heritage point of view there is no objection against the proposed deviation of the route. The development may therefore continue.
It should be noted however that the subterranean pr
esence of archaeological and/or historical sites, features or artifacts is always a distinct possibility. Care should therefore be taken when the development commences further that if any of these are discovered, a qualified archaeologist be called in to investigate and that the report be amended if necessary.
It is also important to take cognizance that it is the client’s responsibility to do the submission of this report via the SAHRIS System on the SAHRA website. No work on site may commence before receiving the necessary comments from SAHRA.
