Summary
Archaetnos cc was requested by XStrata Coal SA (Goedgevonden Colliery) to conduct an assessment of a number of existing graves and grave sites earmarked for exhumation and relocation. This forms part of a larger project that commenced in 2007, during which a number of graves (known, older than 60 years of age and unknown) have already been exhumed and relocated. The aims of the assessment was to determine the number of graves still to be exhumed and relocated from the Goedgevonden Colliery area to be impacted on by mining operations.
Eight grave sites, containing more than 300 graves, were visited and assessed, while a ninth site also to be impacted were not visited. Some of the grave sites fall outside the area to be mined, and therefore not all the graves identified will have to be exhumed and relocated.
