Heritage impact assessment for the replacement of the C9 pipeline between Rand Show road and a tailings dam, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province
Summary
Archaetnos cc was requested by Cultmatrix Heritage Consultants, on behalf of Jeffares & Green (Pty) Ltd, to conduct a Heritage Impact Assessment, for the replacement of a 1200m section of the C9 Rand Water Service pipeline, situated around 300m from the Rand Show Road, east of Soweto and west of NASREC. The section of pipeline is located on the farm Mooifontein 225 IQ, south of Johannesburg in Gauteng.
No cultural (archaeological & historical) sites of heritage significance were identified during the survey. The area has been severely disturbed in the past, and any sites that might have existed here would have been disturbed or destroyed. The report gives a discussion of the findings and gives an indication of the methodology followed as well. It also indicates how to deal with any cultural material that may be unearthed during upgrading activities.
From a Cultural Heritage point of view there would be no objection to the development continuing, taking cognizance of the recommendations put forward at the end of this report.
