upgrade & rehabilitation of the national route 8 section10 from De Brug Farm (31.7km) to Kloofeind (63.2km)

Summary

Archaetnos cc was requested by Jeffares & Green Engineering and Environmental Consulting to conduct a Basic Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) for the rehabilitation and upgrade of the National Route 8 Section 10 from De Brug (31.70km) to Kloofeind (63.2km). The section is situated between Bloemfontein and Kimberley in the Free State.

Only one site of cultural heritage (archaeological or historical) significance were identified during the survey along the section of the N8, although it will not be impacted on by the proposed development activities. The road section that will be upgraded and rehabilitated runs through an area that has already been extensively disturbed. The report gives a discussion of the observations during the survey and also gives an indication of the methodology followed. A background to the archaeology and history of the area is also provided. It also indicates how to deal with any cultural heritage material that may be unearthed during the development activities.

Mitigation measures to minimize the impact of the development on any sites that might be found subsequently are put forward at the end of this report.
