A report on a cultural heritage impact assessment on portion 11 (a portion of portion 3) of the farm Doornrug 302 JS, west of Witbank, Mpumalanga

Summary

Archaetnos cc was requested by Umcebo Mining, Doornrug Colliery, in conjunction with Zenzele Funeral Home cc in Witbank, to exhume and relocate approximately 45 (possible) unmarked graves on portion 11 (a portion of portion 3) of the farm Doornrug 302 JS, west of Witbank. These features were located during mining development, and a subsequent heritage impact assessment carried out in the area.

The possible graves were concentrated in two main areas, while a number were also scattered around the area. The graves consisted mainly of stone packed cairns of irregular size and shape. During social consultation conducted by Zenzele in the area local residents indicated that there are graves of family members located in the vicinity, but that the graves under discussion are not linked to them. During the exhumation process, it became clear that these ?graves? could in fact have been wrongly identified as such. This report is the result of the work undertaken.
