A report on a cultural heritage impact assessment for the proposed chrome mining at Jagdlust on the farm Winterveld 417 and the farm Zeekoegat 421, Limpopo Province
Summary
Archaetnos cc was appointed by Menco on behalf of Samancor Chrome Limited to conduct a cultural heritage impact assessment for the proposed mining activities at Jagdlust on the farm Wintersveld 417 as well as on the farm Zeekoegat 421. These farms are situated to the northwest of the town of Steelpoort in the Limpopo Province.
The fieldwork undertaken revealed four sites of cultural heritage significance. These are all of medium or low cultural significance. The possible Early Iron Age site on the farm Zeekoegat may however be of a higher cultural significance, but the current features on the site make a final assessment impossible.
The mining activities may however continue after the necessary mitigation measures as proposed in this report have been implemented. Special attention should be given to the working brief relating to the Early Iron Age site indicated.
