A 2nd report on the 1st phase archaeological investigation of graves on various farms, impacted on by the New Goedgevonden colliery near Ogies, Mpumalanga Province
Summary
Archaetnos cc was requested by Goedgevonden Colliery, on behalf of XStrata Coal SA, to carry out the archaeological investigation and exhumation of a number of graves older than 60 years of age, as well as a number of graves of unknown age and origin, located on various farms in the Ogies area. The graves, situated on numerous informal cemeteries on the property of Goedgevonden Colliery, are to be impacted on by opencast coal mining operations.
The project is conducted through various phases, and as a result the graves are also investigated, exhumed and relocated in different phases. This document constitutes a report on a 2nd session of the archaeological investigation and exhumation of graves for the Goedgevonden Project. Two graves, both older than 60 years of age, located on a single grave site, are discussed in the report. The grave site represented was numbered GRY 17.
This report is also the last report on the current permit issued by SAHRA (expired 1 May 2009). The next phase of grave investigations, exhumations and relocations will be conducted once the permit has been extended. The reasons for the delay in finishing the project have been provided by XStrata Coal, and have been provided to SAHRA in order for the permit to be extended. Once the last graves have been exhumed a final report will be submitted.
