A report on the archaeological investigation of graves on the farm Zonnebloem 396 JS, impacted on by the Vuna colliery mining operations, near Middelburg Mpumalanga Province
Summary
Archaetnos cc was appointed by Vuna Mining Enterprises, in conjunction with AVBOB Middelburg, to assist with the investigation and exhumation of a number of graves, located on portion 5 of the farm Zonnebloem 396 JS near Middelburg, Mpumalanga. The graves will be impacted on by opencast operations of Vuna Colliery and needed to be exhumed and relocated. No descendants or family members could be traced during the social consultation process, and the graves were therefore unknown. The graves were exhumed and relocated to a new cemetery established by the mine on the same property.
This document constitutes a final report on the results of the fieldwork undertaken and is associated with Permit 80/08/10/009/51. Each individual burial is discussed in Appendix 2 (Burial Forms). A summarized discussion is also given.
We believe that the archaeological investigation, exhumation and relocation of the graves from the area were conducted successfully and that the proposed development can continue, taking into consideration a number of recommendations put forward at the end of the report.
