A report on a heritage impact assessment for the proposed extension of the existing Avalon cemetery situated on portion 129 of the farm Doornkop 299 JQ, Johannesburg, Gauteng

Summary

Archaetnos cc was sub-contracted by Strategic Environmental Focus (Lead Consultant) to conduct a Heritage Impact Assessment for the extension of the existing Avalon Cemetery, located on Portion 129 of the farm Doornkop 299 IQ, in Johannesburg, Gauteng. Besides the HIA, the heritage specialist (with expertise in graves) had to provide a management plan for existing graves noted on the site, as well as any others that might be identified during the HIA, as well as recommendations for a buffer area between the existing graves and the proposed formal grave layout.

Over and above the known graves in the area, no other sites of cultural heritage significance, including further graves, were identified during the HIA in the area to be impacted upon by the proposed cemetery extension. This report provides a discussion of the grave site and also gives an indication of the methodology followed. It also indicates how to deal with any archaeological material that may be unearthed during activities associated with the cemetery extension in the future.

The grave site is of high cultural significance and, certain mitigation measures needs to be implemented to minimize any possible negative impacts on it. Once these measures have been implemented, and the conclusions and recommendations at the end of the report have been taken into cognizance, and the Management has been implemented, the cemetery extension may continue.
