A heritage impact assessment study for the proposed Ikoti Klipfontein Coal Mine
on various portions of the farm Klipfontein 241 IS near Breyten, Mpumalanga Province

Summary

Archaetnos cc was appointed by Bateleur Environmental and Monitoring Services, on behalf of Ikoti Coal (Pty) Lt, to conduct a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) for the proposed new Ikoti Coal Mine on various portions of the farm Klipfontein 241 IS, near Breyten in Mpumalanga.

The aims were to determine if there are any archaeological and historical sites, features and objects in the area that need be taken into consideration when development work commences. A desktop study formed part of the work.

A number of cultural heritage (archaeological and historical) sites and features were identified and recorded during the desktop study and fieldwork in the area. Portions of the area have been extensively disturbed in the recent past through various activities, mainly agriculture (ploughing and crop raising) and if any sites did exist here it might have been completely disturbed or destroyed.

The report discusses the results of the study while a number of recommendations are put forward at the end of the report. Should these be implemented there would be no objection from a Cultural Heritage point of view to the proposed development.
