Report on the Phase II heritage investigation of two buildings at the Stewards Extention 9, Benoni, Gauteng Province

Summary

Archaetnos cc was requested by Black Stock Investments (Pty) Ltd to conduct a phase II heritage documentation of two buildings at the Stewards Extention 9, Benoni. This is in the Gauteng Province.

The phase II investigation was a result of the recommendations of a Phase I investigation done in June 2010. Legislation relevant to heritage was also discussed. The most important of these are the National Heritage Resources Act (25 of 1999).

One of the buildings is believed to be younger than 60 years. It is however included since this was recommended during the Phase I report (which did indicate that it may not be older than 60 years). The second is older than 60 years, but it has been changed to such an extent that it does not have any remaining heritage value. It is however also documented as per the conditions set out.

Both may therefore be demolished, the latter one only after a demolition permit has been approved by the Provincial Heritage Resources Agency of the Gauteng Province (PHRAG).
