A report on the archaeological investigation, exhumation and relocation of a number of burials impacted on by Sasol Mining’s construction of the D1574 Boschmansfontein Road on the farm Holgatsfontein 531IR, near Secunda, Mpumalanga
Summary
Archaetnos cc was requested by SASOL Mining (Pty) Ltd to assist them with the investigation, exhumation and relocation of a number of graves that will impacted on by their construction of the D1574 Boschmansfontein Road. The grave site is located on the farm Holgatsfontein 535IR. The work was conducted in conjunction with AVBOB Johannesburg. A permit from SAHRA (12/05/001/87) was obtained and used for this purpose after all processes were followed (newspaper advertisements, social consultation and consents obtained from family members). A total of 8 graves, of which 4 were unknown in terms of identity and age, were investigated during the exhumation work in September. The family members of the identified deceased were present during the work undertaken.
This report discusses the results of the investigations and exhumations. Each grave is handled separately and the information from each provided. The required work was completed successfully and the development of the road in this section can therefore continue.
