A second report on a cultural heritage impact assessment for the proposed Klipspruit sewage treatment works and pipeline in Witbank, Mpumalanga Province

Summary

Archaetnos cc was appointed by Landscape Dynamics to conduct a cultural heritage impact assessment for the proposed Klipspruit Sewage Treatment Works and Pipeline close to Witbank in the Mpumalanga Province.

In the area impacted upon by the proposed development one site of cultural heritage significance was found, dating to the Historical Age. The report gives a discussion of the site and also gives an indication of the methodology followed. It also indicates how to deal with any archaeological material that may be unearthed during construction activities in the future.

The site is of a high cultural significance as it is a grave yard. There is two possible ways of dealing with this. The recommended option is to change the route that the pipeline needs to follow so that there is no impact on the graves. However, should this not be possible (which needs to be motivated by the client) the graves may be exhumed and reburied.

It is concluded that the proposed development may not continue until the mitigation measures have been implemented.
