A report on the archaeological investigation of graves on portion 2 of the farm Klippan 452 JS (Emachibini), impacted on by the Klippan colliery opencast coal mining operations near Wonderfontein, Carolina distirct, Mpumalanga Province
Summary
Archaetnos cc was requested by UMCEBO MINING, in conjunction with Zenzele Funerals from Witbank, to carry out the archaeological investigation and exhumation of a number of known and unknown graves located on Portion 2 of the farm Klippan 452 JS near Wonderfontein in the Carolina District, Mpumalanga. A total of 67 graves, on two sites (Grave Sites A & B) were investigated during March & April 2009.
This document constitutes a final report on the results of the fieldwork undertaken and is associated with Permit BG/08/12/002/87. Each individual burial is discussed in Appendix 2 (Burial Forms). A summarized discussion is also given.
We believe that the archaeological investigation, exhumation and relocation of the graves from the site were conducted successfully and that the mining operations in the area can continue.
