A short report on the exhumation and relocation of two known graves younger than 60 years of age (site 17), impacted on by the New Goedgevonden colliery near Ogies, Mpumalanga Province

Summary

Archaetnos cc was requested by Goedgevonden Colliery, on behalf of XStrata Coal SA, to participate in the exhumation and relocation of two known graves, younger than 60 years of age and known. The graves, situated on Grave Site 17, one of several informal cemeteries on the property of Goedgevonden Colliery, are to be impacted on by opencast coal mining operations.

This work forms part of a project which is conducted through various phases, and as a result the graves are also investigated, exhumed and relocated in different phases. This document constitutes a short report on the exhumation and relocation of 2graves belonging to the Kruger family. Family members gave permission for the relocation and were also present during the exhumations. Both burials were relocated to the Alberton North Cemetery.

Although both burials are younger than 60 years of age, and therefore falls outside of the jurisdiction of SAHRA, Archaetnos was requested to be present when the exhumation took place to ensure that all remains are found and recorded before reburial. It can be stated that the exhumation and relocation of both burials were completed successfully. All graves from Site 17 have therefore been relocated, including the ones older than 60 years of age and reported on by Archaetnos in AE926.
